Lahey's own colonoscopy guidance is one sentence long and it stops a lot of people cold: bring someone with you to drive you home. It does not say who that person can be, how long they need to stay, or what happens if you do not have one. Those are the questions we get asked, so here are the answers.

We drive people to the Endoscopy Center at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, 41 Mall Road in Burlington, most weeks. This is what we have learned.

Can I drive myself home after a colonoscopy at Lahey?

No. You will be sedated, and sedation does not wear off on the schedule it feels like it does. Lahey's endoscopy team performs these procedures under sedation or anesthesia, and no one is cleared to drive afterward.

The reason is not just grogginess. Procedural sedation impairs judgement and reaction time for hours after a patient subjectively feels fine, which is exactly why the rule is absolute rather than left to how you feel on the day. Clinicians have debated whether the standard 24 hour driving ban is longer than necessary, but no one argues you can drive yourself home the same morning.

Can I take an Uber or a taxi home instead?

Almost certainly not, and this is where most people get caught out. A rideshare driver is not a responsible adult under the unit's discharge policy. They cannot come in, they cannot receive your discharge instructions, and they cannot confirm to a nurse that they are taking responsibility for you.

What if I do not have anyone to bring me?

Then you hire one. This is a real service and most people have no idea it exists, which is why procedures get cancelled that did not need to be.

They check you in, wait through the procedure, are identified by name to the unit, stay reachable, take your written and verbal discharge instructions from the nurse, and get you home. How long does the escort need to be there?

Longer than most families expect. Lahey tells patients the exam itself runs roughly 45 to 60 minutes but to plan on two to three hours at the hospital once waiting, preparation and recovery are counted.

So a 9:00 AM appointment is realistically a person's whole morning. That is the reason a favour from a working relative falls apart. It is not a lift, it is half a day.

Can you drop me off and come back?

We can, but for a sedation procedure we usually advise against it. Endoscopy units run ahead as often as behind, and if you finish early the unit cannot discharge you until your escort is physically there. You end up waiting in recovery while a driver is twenty minutes away.

What if there are stairs at my house?

Tell us before the day. Coming home sedated and unsteady is the worst possible time to discover that the three front steps are a problem, and a curb to curb service will leave you at the curb.

Call the Endoscopy Center at Lahey on 781-744-8690 and ask two things: what time you actually need to arrive, and whether they will accept a professional escort rather than a family member. In our experience they will, but confirm it for your own appointment rather than taking our word for it.
