What is non-emergency medical transportation?
NEMT is a scheduled ride to a medical appointment for someone who is not in an emergency but cannot safely drive or take a bus or rideshare: wheelchair users, people recovering from surgery, dialysis and cancer patients, and older adults who need a hand.
How much does it cost?
$115 each way or $230 round trip within 5 miles, then $2 a mile. Add stair assistance for $200 if there are steps at home.
Does Medicare or MassHealth cover it?
Original Medicare does not cover routine rides. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a set number, and MassHealth members can request rides to covered appointments through their doctor. Private pay works when you need flexibility, a same week ride, or a driver who comes inside.
