Need Help Navigating the MassHealth PCA Program? Start With Care Remedy
To get into the MassHealth Personal Care Attendant (PCA) program, you start with a Personal Care Management (PCM) agency. Care Remedy is one, and our PCM website, pcm.careremedy.com, is where individuals, families and referring professionals take the first step. You do not need to understand the whole program before you reach out.
What is the difference between PCM and PCA?
A PCA gives you the hands on help. A PCM agency gets you into the program and helps you run it.
- Personal Care Attendant (PCA): provides authorized physical help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting and transfers.
- Personal Care Management (PCM) agency: explains your responsibilities, coordinates the nurse evaluation, submits the request for authorization to MassHealth, and provides ongoing skills training.
The program is consumer directed. You choose, hire and manage your PCA, with a surrogate or other support if you need it.
In the PCA program you direct your own care. Your PCM agency helps you manage the process.
Who is the PCA program for?
People with a permanent or chronic disability who have MassHealth Standard or CommonHealth and need physical help with two or more activities of daily living. Age is not a factor. Our guide to who qualifies for PCA and who you can hire covers the details, including paying a family member.
How can Care Remedy help?
Our PCM website has one starting point for each situation:
- New to the program? Start an enrollment inquiry online.
- Already with another PCM agency? Request a transfer conversation.
- A social worker, provider or community partner? Make a referral online or by fax.
- Still learning? Explore the PCM resource center.
Enrollment starts with a conversation about your daily care needs.
What happens after I submit an intake?
You get a reference number, and our team reviews your information and contacts the designated person to talk through coverage, care needs and next steps. Submitting an intake does not guarantee eligibility or approval for services.
Can I switch PCM agencies?
Yes, you can request a transfer. Keep working with your current PCM agency while the required coordination takes place, so there is no gap in your care. Have your current agency's name and your authorization dates handy when you call. MassHealth publishes the official list of PCM agencies.
How do professionals refer someone?
Use the online referral form, or fax our PCM intake team: Woburn 781-730-4716, Brockton and Springfield 857-678-9606. Include your name, organization and callback number, the person's contact details, and confirmation you have permission to refer. Please do not send medical records or MassHealth ID numbers by ordinary email.
