Dementia care at home in Massachusetts

Dementia is the reason most families call us. People with Alzheimer's, Lewy body or vascular dementia do best at home, in the chair they know and with the cat they recognize, for as long as that is safe. Care Remedy sends home health aides trained in dementia care to Greater Boston, the South Shore and Western Massachusetts. Our aides come for a few hours, overnight or 24 hours a day.

How much does dementia home care cost?

$45 an hour, booked from 1 to 8 hours. Overnight is $540 per 12 hour night. 24 hour care is $1,080 a day. No minimum contract, no assessment fee. For a typical weekday schedule (6 hours a day, 5 days a week) that is about $5,400 a month.

Which stage of dementia are you in?

Early stage looks like forgetting appointments and repeating questions. Middle stage looks like getting lost in the neighborhood, trouble with bathing and dressing, and sundowning in the late afternoon. Late stage looks like full help with eating, transfers and toileting, and often needing someone there at night. We work with families at every stage and change the plan as the dementia changes.

What is sundowning and what helps?

Sundowning is the agitation, restlessness or confusion that appears in the late afternoon and evening. It is not a willful behavior. Our aides handle it with a predictable routine: a snack around 4pm, dim lights, no new visitors, a familiar show, and a walk if the person is still mobile. Writing down what triggered an episode and what calmed it is often what makes the next day easier.

Will the aide handle wandering?

Yes. We keep the person engaged so they are less likely to wander, and we know how to redirect without arguing when they want to "go home". For families who need overnights, we offer awake overnight care so no one has to listen for the door.

Can the aide give medications?

Our aides are not nurses, so they do not administer medications. They can give reminders, be present while your loved one takes their own medication, and call for help if something goes wrong. Our PCM agency works with MassHealth to coordinate PCA hours when the person qualifies.

When is it time for memory care instead of home care?

When the person is unsafe at home even with 24 hour aides, when they do no t recognize family at all, or when physical care has become more than two aides can manage. We help families make that call honestly. Sometimes the answer is memory care; often it is one more year at home with better support.

How do we get started?

In-home services can be personalized to match your loved one's specific diagnosis.

Care Remedy will craft a unique care plan tailored to your loved one's condition, aligning with their diagnosis to enhance their daily life with comfort and joy.

Starting with Care Remedy

Care Remedy simplifies the process of finding suitable services and care providers for your loved one. Begin by arranging a complimentary consultation. This session allows Care Remedy to gain a comprehensive understanding of your loved one's circumstances and establish the groundwork for their care plan. Additionally, coordinators will be available to address any inquiries you may have regarding in-home care.

Our Dementia care schedule can be tailored to part-time, full-time, or 24/7 caregiving, aligning with your loved one's established routines. The schedule will also consider accommodating family members residing with or conducting regular care visits for your loved one.

Post-consultation, Care Remedy will further refine your loved one's care plan. Often, care coordination will be done in conjunction with medical professionals and other healthcare providers.

The last step involves pairing your loved one with a qualified, knowledgeable, and compassionate care provider. Care Remedy ensures all caregivers undergo rigorous screening before assignment.
