Yes. Adults 60 and older in Massachusetts who are frail, isolated or homebound can get free home delivered meals, and many towns run volunteer grocery shopping programs. Call MassOptions at 1-800-243-4636 to start. If those don't fit, a home care team can shop, pick up prescriptions and carry everything inside for a fee.

Groceries are carried in and cold items are put away.

How do I get free meals delivered to a senior in Massachusetts?

The meals come through the state's Senior Nutrition Program. MassOptions connects you to the local Aging Services Access Point, which also runs home care programs that can include grocery shopping help. Many local Councils on Aging run volunteer shopping programs as well. If your parent receives SNAP, they can use their EBT card to buy groceries online from several large stores.

When does a paid errand service make sense?

When the free options don't fit. Typical reasons are a waitlist, a delivery that's left on the porch, a store that won't put anything away, or a parent who needs someone to check the order and bring it in. It also helps when a prescription is ready today and can't wait for a weekly delivery.

How does prescription pickup work?

Tell us the pharmacy and when the prescription is ready. We pick it up and bring it home the same day. The pharmacy and your parent's preferences stay on file, so the next pickup is one phone call. Our team members are not nurses and do not give medication. They bring the prescription in and hand it to your parent.

Can you shop from a weekly list?

Yes. Give us a standing list and we'll shop on the same day every week. We carry the bags in and put the cold items away. We can also order meals from the restaurants your parent likes and check the order against their diet.

Errands can be combined with a check in visit or a ride.

How is it paid?

Errands go on your account, so your parent never hands a card or cash to anyone. Family members can place an order from anywhere and get a text when it's delivered. Call for current errand pricing.

Can errands be added to a ride?

Yes. If your parent is already riding with us to an appointment, we can stop at the pharmacy on the way home. See Ride Plans for regular schedules.
