Cambridge has world-class hospitals within a mile of almost everyone, and some of the least accessible housing in the state. A third-floor walk-up off Massachusetts Avenue, a Victorian on a Cambridgeport side street with a high stoop and a narrow interior flight, a converted two-family near Inman Square where the staircase turns twice. Mount Auburn Hospital might be eight minutes away, and completely out of reach.

Walk-Ups Are the Cambridge Problem

A large share of Cambridge housing predates elevators and was never retrofitted. Historic-district rules make exterior ramps difficult. Landings are tight, treads are worn, and many staircases turn at least once between the unit and the street.

Add the parking. A lift van needs clearance beside the vehicle to deploy, and on a resident-permit block in Riverside or Wellington-Harrington that clearance is not always there. We work this out on the booking call, not at the curb, which usually means agreeing on a pickup point a few doors along or a time when the block is clearer.

How the Stair Chair Transfer Works

A stair chair is the same class of equipment fire and EMS crews use: a compact wheeled chair with tracks that let a seated person descend under control. The rider is secured with chest and leg straps and two trained staff work the chair from above and below, so the equipment takes the weight on each tread rather than anyone's back.

Where Cambridge Riders Go

Mount Auburn Hospital and CHA Cambridge Hospital are the closest, followed by Mass General across the river, and the Longwood campuses: Brigham and Women's, Beth Israel Deaconess, and Dana-Farber. Door-Through-Door Means the Far End Too

Boston and Cambridge hospital campuses are large. The drop-off point and the actual clinic can be a long walk and two elevator banks apart. Our aide walks the rider in to the check-in desk, and on the return we bring them back inside and up the stairs before we leave. That last part is what separates this from a van service.
