Yes, VA Aid and Attendance can pay for a home health aide. It is a monthly pension add-on for wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities, and the money goes to the family, so you choose the caregiver. For 2026 the maximum is $2,424 a month for a single veteran.

How much does Aid and Attendance pay in 2026?

These are the maximum annual pension rates with Aid and Attendance, in effect December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2026:

  • Veteran with no dependents: $29,093 a year, about $2,424 a month
  • Veteran with a spouse or one dependent: $34,488 a year, about $2,874 a month
  • Two married veterans, both qualifying: $46,143 a year, about $3,845 a month
  • Surviving spouse with no dependents: $18,697 a year, about $1,558 a month

The actual payment is the maximum minus countable income. Unreimbursed medical expenses, including what you pay a home care agency, are deducted from income first. That is why paying for care often increases the benefit.

Who qualifies?

Three tests, all required:

  • Service: at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a wartime period, and a discharge other than dishonorable.
  • Need: help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating or toileting, or being bedbound or in a nursing facility. A doctor documents this on the VA exam form.
  • Finances: net worth (assets plus annual income) at or under $163,699 for this benefit year. The primary home and car do not count. The VA looks back three years at asset transfers.

Can it pay for an agency aide, or only family?

Either. The VA does not pick the provider. Many families use it to cover a few hours of home health aide care each day and handle the rest themselves.

What does that buy at Care Remedy?

Our home health aide care is $45 an hour with no minimum contract and no assessment fee. A single veteran's maximum of about $2,424 a month covers roughly 54 hours, or close to two hours a day. Agency invoices also serve as the medical expense proof the VA asks for.

A few paid hours a day is the most common way families use the benefit.

How do you apply?

  • Get the DD-214 discharge papers.
  • Have the doctor complete VA Form 21-2680, the exam for Aid and Attendance.
  • File VA Form 21P-527EZ (veteran) or 21P-534EZ (surviving spouse) with income, assets and care costs.
  • Get free help first: your town's Veterans' Services Officer (every Massachusetts city and town has one) or an accredited Veterans Service Organization. You should never pay to file.

Decisions can take months, but benefits are generally paid back to the filing date, so file before you start care if you can. Massachusetts veterans may also qualify for state Chapter 115 benefits through the same local office.
