What we do in Springfield

Wheelchair accessible transportation

Ramp equipped vans with proper securement for manual chairs, power chairs, and scooters. Appointments, dialysis, hospital and rehab discharge, family visits, worship, and airport runs to Bradley and Logan. Family members and caregivers ride with you at no extra charge.

Transportation to medical procedures

Colonoscopies, cataract surgery, infusions, and anything requiring sedation. No facility will discharge you after sedation without a responsible adult. Your driver waits or returns on schedule and assists you to and from the door.

PCA services and home care

Care Remedy holds a MassHealth Personal Care Management contract, so we can help Springfield residents navigate the PCA program as well as provide private duty care. Personal care, bathing and dressing support, companion and respite care, and skilled nursing at home.

Why families call us rather than the van service

PVTA Senior Van service is real and it is currently fare free, which is a genuine benefit. The catch is that trips are space available, with priority given to certified ADA riders . For a routine errand that is fine. For a 6am dialysis shift, a surgery you cannot reschedule, or a discharge you did not see coming, space available is not a plan.

We book a specific vehicle for a specific time, and we go outside the PVTA service area, including into Connecticut.

Where we take Springfield residents

In the city: Baystate Medical Center on Chestnut Street, the region's only Level 1 trauma center, and Mercy Medical Center on Carew Street. Also Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital and Shriners Children's on Carew Street.

Dialysis: Fresenius Western Mass Kidney Center on Main Street and the East Springfield center on State Street, where shifts start as early as 5am. Also Pioneer Valley Dialysis in West Springfield.

Cancer care and infusion: the D'Amour Center for Cancer Care and the Baystate Infusion Suite, both on Main Street.

Health centers: Caring Health Center, Baystate Brightwood on Plainfield Street, Baystate Mason Square on Wilbraham Road, and the Springfield VA Clinic on Bond Street.

Rehab and skilled nursing: Sixteen Acres Health and Rehabilitation, Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing, Encompass Health in Ludlow, and the JGS Lifecare campus in Longmeadow.

Outside the city: Baystate Noble in Westfield, Baystate Wing in Palmer, Holyoke Medical Center, Cooley Dickinson in Northampton, and Baystate Franklin in Greenfield.

Worth knowing: Vibra Hospital on State Street has closed and the campus was sold to the city. If an old referral still points there, call the referring office first.

Boston and Bradley trips

Boston is about 90 miles east on the Pike, close to two hours each way without traffic. That makes a Dana-Farber, Mass General, Brigham or Boston Children's appointment a full day. We do these regularly and we plan the day around your appointment time rather than the other way round.

Bradley International is a short run down I-91 and much closer than Logan. If you are flying, ask us about both.

Questions Springfield families ask

My father lives in a three family with a porch and no railing. Can you still transport him?

Yes. More than a third of Springfield's housing was built before 1939, and much of it is multi family with exterior stairs and no elevator. Stair assistance is a separate service from a standard van and usually means a second crew member. Tell us the number of steps and roughly his weight when you book.

Is the east side of the city a problem for a wheelchair van?

No, but it is worth mentioning when you book. Springfield is flat downtown and gets steadily hillier as you move east through Sixteen Acres and the Heights, and steep driveways change how we approach a pickup.

What about winter?

Springfield averages around forty inches of snow a year. Ramps and walkways are the real hazard, not the roads. If the path to your door is not cleared, tell us when you book and we will plan for it rather than discover it at 6am.

My dialysis shift starts at 5am. Do you run that early?

Yes. Early morning and late evening dialysis runs are routine. Give us the schedule and we set up the standing trip.

Do you speak Spanish?

Nearly forty percent of Springfield speaks a language other than English at home. Tell us what you need when you call and we will be straight with you about what we can arrange.

I have MassHealth. Is any of this covered?

It depends on the service and your plan. We hold a MassHealth Personal Care Management contract and can walk you through what the PCA program covers and what would be private pay.

Local resources worth knowing

The Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center on Roosevelt Avenue is the main Springfield Council on Aging site, with the Hungry Hill and North End senior centers also operating. Greater Springfield Senior Services on Industry Avenue is the regional aging services agency and the starting point for state funded home care.
